Hello, can you hear me?

Hello, can you hear me?featured

A new mother sits behind me. She’s with a child who’s nearing one year of age. Her daughter is tottering and tinkering about while she is consumed with talking to others, eating her food, and scrolling on her phone.

Occasionally the mother shushes the child who has found joy in drumming on a wooden bench. “Stop it. Please sit down.”

I smile at the child. She squeals with delight and her golden ringlet curls light up like a small glowing sun.

As the mother remains caught in the distractions of her own reality, her child is speaking. Not in discernible English, but communicating through her eyes, her gestures, and her mind.

This reminds me of horses, all animals really, nature included; the flowers, the trees, the sky, the sea, and the breeze… Rocks, birds, insects, the loving “invisible” souls who surround us. They too, like this young child, are always communicating with us.

Are we listening?
